Local residents Phil Barnett, Mike Hamlin, Ken McAvoy and Wil Quijano, owners of the highly rated Wood-n-Tap restaurants, own and operate TD Homer's Grill along with partner Al Ferranti. The five partners also own the popular downtown Mexican restaurant, Agave Grill. Since opening their first restaurant, Wood-n-Tap in Hartford in 2002, the partners of Hartford Restaurant Group have made giving back to the community a priority. Through numerous charity events and fundraisers, the Hartford Restaurant Group has donated over $100,000 to local non-profit organizations.
Wood-n-Tap and TD Homer's have a tradition of holding Grand Opening Fundraisers to benefit local charities in the communities where they are opening an HRG restaurant. HRG would like to thank their vendors, friends, family members and the community organizers who have worked with us to make these events a huge success. So far these fundraisers have raised over $19,700 for local communities.
Each holiday season, Wood-n-Tap and TD Homer's team up to raise money for those in need. From 2006 - 2009, the HRG restaurants partnered with "We Are the Children" to organize a toy donation drive. Our generous guests donated thousands of toys and raised $8,914 to benefit the less fortunate children in the State of Connecticut.
In 2010, Wood-n-Tap and TD Homer's teamed up with The Make A Wish Foundation's Connecticut Chapter and raised $4,207. Guests were able to donate $1, $3, or $5 to make a wish come true for a Connecticut child battling a life-threatening medical condition.
"Make a Wish" experiences do wonders for these children and their families. They inspire joyful memories that will last forever while providing the child with a respite from long hospital stays and medical treatments. These "Wishes" allow "kids to be kids" again. The Make-A-Wish Foundation of Connecticut has granted over 1700 wishes since its founding in 1986.
Every year, all the Wood-n-Taps and TD Homer's host FanTapsy Football to raise money and awareness for CT Children's Medical Center. FanTapsy Football is a unique fantasy football experience. Six conferences, 24 divisions and 288 teams play against each other and have a chance to win a fantasy grand prize. The Grand Prize in 2009 was a trip for two with all expenses paid to see the NFL Pro Bowl in Miami. The 2010 grand prize was a six-night all-expenses-paid Caribbean cruise! Last season, we raised $5,244 for the CT Children's Medical Center. A $30 donation gets you a spot in one of the state's fastest growing and most popular fantasy football leagues.
In addition to substantial donations to We Are the Children, CT Children's Medical Center, The Susan G. Komen Foundation, St. Jude's Medical Research Center, Hartford Distributors Memorial Fund and Channel 3 Kids Camp, Hartford Restaurant Group has provided support to organizations such as local Boys and Girls Clubs, Roses for Autism, the Hartford Arts Council, The Mill Foundation, Southington Western Little League, Rocky Hill Parks & Rec and numerous PTO groups. HRG also sponsors several local community sports teams each year. A list of the programs we've supported and helped throughout the years follows:
Phil Barnett received the 2010 40 Under Forty Award because of his commitment to local communities. Here's an excerpt from his interview.
What do you want to be doing in 10 years?
"I would be thrilled to have grown our company and the Wood-n-Tap brand throughout Connecticut (and hopefully beyond) while supporting the local communities and their charities. I feel it is very important to give back to the communities that support our businesses.
"I have a lot of heart and determination. I never want to become complacent about my businesses because there is always room for improvement."
What about Community Involvement?
"Over the past seven-plus years, the Hartford Restaurant Group has supported many local charities and community organizations to raise over $100,000. Our community support has helped us to thrive and we want to help our communities thrive. We have supported a variety of organizations from large non-profit charities, such as the Lea's Foundation for Leukemia research and Autism Speaks, to local various school PTO fundraisers and multiple memorial fundraisers. A good portion of our office workers' day is reading and responding to the thousands of requests we get each year. We are so flattered and honored that we are so well known for our eagerness and generosity."
